Covid 19 Protocols
The Cemanahuac Spanish School had a limited opening a couple of months ago with stringent Covid-19 precautions in place. Mexico is also a welcoming, and increasingly popular haven for international travelers.
As a country Mexico is still observing Covid-19 protocols of mask wearing in public spaces and businesses, social distancing, frequent hand washing.
A great thing about Mexico (one of many) is that much of what people do is outside and in well ventilated, non-air-conditioned spaces. Cemanahuac holds its classes in garden settings. Some are in three-walled classrooms with the fourth side opening right onto a garden. Some are on terraces under awnings. All have fans blowing air out of the class setting.

Teachers and students are each provided transparent face shields as well as free-standing 1 meter x 1 meter (3 feet x 3 feet) plexiglass shields which they position to break the airflow towards the person with whom they are speaking, while allowing their faces to be seen – an important aspect of language learning. Our class size tends to be one or two students and is limited to five students maximum per teacher.
Home stays with Mexican host families are an important part of our program. Full-dosage Covid-19 vaccination is required for both host families and students.
On field study trips participants may use a tour-guiding earphone system allowing the trip leader to speak to the group in a normal voice while maintaining social distancing.
Mexico welcomes international travelers. Air and sea arrivals are un-restricted though overland border crossings are still restricted. Airlines each have their own Covid-19 precautions and regulations. Check with your travel provider for its Covid-19 requirements for travel.
International flights out of Mexico require a negative result on a Covid-19 Antigen test within 72 hours of flight departure time. These are available in Cuernavaca for US$14 three blocks from Cemanahuac. No test is required for domestic flights. Passengers with an elevated temperature or Covid-19 symptoms are not allowed on any form of public transportation.
Visitors to Mexico need to be aware that if they are infected with Covid-19 while in Mexico, they will need to stay in Mexico until they have recovered. Public transportation (i.e. airline or bus) back to the U.S., or to any other country, would not be an option. Housing with a host family will not be allowed for participants in the program who are testing positive for Covid-19. Hence medical insurance which covers Covid-19 is highly recommended. Cemanahuac has several small individual apartments where one could safely quarantine if not requiring medical care.
